One of my favorite places at the Kalamazoo Nature Center is the trail to the gravel pits. The view of the Kalamazoo valley is amazing from the hilltop. The path crosses the creek, where I've done two other paintings, and climbs the hill. At the top of the hill is this great Maple tree. The sunlight breaks through from the clearing beyond it and illuminates the whole thing. I started this painting around the same time my friend Chris was working on a painting of the same tree. Chris and I live far apart but we show each other our work as we progress through frequent e-mails and found that this tree was on both of our easels at the same time.
