I spent the day drawing in the woods with my friend John recently. He took me to a stand of pines near his home in Farmington where we both found places that suited us and we began to work. All of the vertical lines of the trees are wonderful and quieting, but I am always aware of the fallen trees, the horizontal lines in the symmetric woods. There is always a change in the light where a tree has fallen, the canopy opens just a little before growing over. This kind of thing is what I end up looking for in a nice set of woods, planted pine or otherwise.
