Looking across the ravine from the woods in the winter is interesting, you can see so much more down below than at any other time of the year. The woods can be very thick here, and one chilly morning I was appreciating this view and composed this painting in my head. There was a light fog below me and the bare trees disappeared just enough to make the other hillside fade away. The sky had that tint of sunrise before the sun was fully up. I love the predawn light and the clarity it brings. Working on this piece I rediscovered drawing into the work and leaving a bit showing here and there. I also used my most worn out brushes to get a random kind of mark, leaving me less in control of the stroke, but more focused on the overall image.
