Light in the Woods
Light in the Woods

I have painted, drawn and photographed this spot in the woods near my house many times. It is a place where a huge White Oak once stood, taking up its share of the light. With it gone the light streams in and creates this view which stops me every time. I painted this with the palette knives and found that painting the chaos of the canopy with its leaves and branches mixed with the light coming through was a lot like painting small color fields. The painting wasn't so much about details of the trees but the whole mixture of the feel of everything moving overhead. The lines and angles of the light below were my main focus, but the overall feeling of a living woods came through it all.
