About

About

I was born Jim Maas and raised in Parchment, Michigan. I married Skipper Stipe, and in our union we created the name StipeMaas. I originally came to Athens with Skipper who would begin study at the University of Georgia School of Law in 1988. I finished an MFA at the university the same year that Skipper completed her law degree, and we have lived in Athens ever since. We have two children, as well as a variety of animals including dogs, cats, and two miniature horses that keep us busy.

I currently work at the Hargrett Rare Book & Manuscript Library at the University of Georgia. Having completing my Master of Archival Studies from Clayton State University, I set upon a path to work as an archivist, and am currently processing manuscript collections. Through the years I have worked as a custodian, a stained glass artist, an art museum preparator, a carpenter and an electrician, teacher, and in galleries, museums, art centers and libraries while in constant pursuit of painting. I have always followed the mold of an artist, having won my first art contest in first grade, and I have traveled that path ever since. I have shown my work in galleries, taught painting classes and kids' art camps, documented private art collections, been an art show juror, a gallery guard, a clay maker, helped start a cooperative art gallery, and I've fabricated large scale outdoor sculptures to name just a few things. I seem to have been able to put my hand onto just about every area of the art world at least once.

I work in a variety of media including oil, oil pastel, watercolor, acrylic, stained glass, printmaking, and drawing, and have shown in Athens and Atlanta as well as in Kalamazoo for the past forty years or so. I normally work in landscapes, usually describing a mood that is sometimes quiet, sometimes intense, and gravitates toward the Spiritual.
