As I drew a great Maple tree one day I realized the the scene behind it was equally amazing. A grove of trees, several different kinds of trees, were blowing in the breeze and the light moved beautifully across the leaves and limbs. This painting evolved over weeks of working with thick paint and palette knives, making the surface lumpier and more interesting. Every layer of paint responded to the rough surface differently and I was able to get a lot of depth in the colors. That seemed to make sense because the leaves and trees began to have an almost sculptural feel to them.
