Black Head is one of the largest and most dramatic heads on Monhegan. It's really quite impressive to see it when you emerge from the woods after the long hike across the island to get there. The colors are amazing, greens along the top and oranges mixed with all kinds of different greys in the rocks. The water is so blue on a clear afternoon and gets a wonderful green color near the rocky shore. White waves crash there and make the dark along the bottom of the head seem that much more vibrant in their mix of green and reds. I sat and watched the waves and sketched, knowing that the real trick in getting a painting of this great place was going to hinge on getting the colors down.
