Spring has a double meaning in this painting, the creek starts at a spring, and it was an image I sketched on the spot this spring. The painting took a few months to complete as I kept referring to the sketch and refining the image to reflect the bright light coming through the canopy before the leaves filled it in. I noticed how many things gather near the water, rocks piled there with green signs of life popping up early among them. While I sketched this spot I saw two red shouldered hawks fighting over my head, and surprisingly their prey dropping near me with a thud. One bird slammed down and retrieved it, right next to me and unaware that I was there, then flew through the trees as the other gave chase again.
