2018
I originally painted this scene in 2005, after seeing a sunset with turbulent clouds above a heavy screen of layered clouds. It was very heavily painted for a sky, with solid forms, more weighty than I normally painted clouds. I recently saw the painting again while moving my studio space and wanted to work back into it with newfound skills and eyes open to the great cloudscapes I'd seen this whole rainy year. I don't often paint clouds but I do find myself attempting it every now and again. In repainting this I found that I liked the previous attempt enough to keep most of the image, but I added to the motion of the clouds, and to the colors that somehow magically come about at sundown.
