Twilight Stream
Twilight Stream
oil on canvas
20" x 16"
2021

After a long hike, when we finally linked up to the trail toward home, I turned to see the reflection of the twilight in the water of the stream. The hills were rich with reddish color in the fallen leaves, and the sky was pale and fading. But the reflections leapt out dramatically, which got me to want to paint them right away. Parts of the painting came together very quickly, which is sometimes hard to allow yourself to continue. With a strong start comes decisions about what to keep and what to pursue. I left the hillsides very close to the first few stages of painting because they just hit the right color and light. Giving myself permission to leave areas less finished has been an ongoing challenge that I feel is very positive for me.
