Flat Cedars
Flat Cedars
oil on canvas board
12" x 16"

I painted this first as a sketch for another work, but then got interested in creating something more abstracted that referenced just the bare minimum of pieces that made the other piece work. I flattened the whole image with large simple spaces of color, which brought me back to some old sensibilities of mine that emerge from time to time relating to color fields. I did a years long series of color fields when I was a young artist, and always seem to have them in the back of my mind, constantly considering seeing from that point of view. This was one rare occasion when I allowed myself the freedom to dig into that.
