Upon arriving at Lake Superior last summer, we were confronted by a massive storm with some of the deepest, darkest clouds I have ever seen. There's something about that lake that always gets my respect, and this time was no exception. I painted this from a photo I snapped, but as usual, I diverged off of the image into a painterly path of getting at the feeling rather than recreating a photograph. I felt myself going back to my roots as a color field painter, getting into the simplicity of the image and working toward very subtle colors from black and white into a series of washes.
