A trip to Cades Cove gave me a lot of things to think about painting. This was one image that I just kept coming back to and felt strangely sure I would paint something very much like this. My paintings can have some thoroughly worked out ideas or compositions most times, but I never seem to know where they'll go once I start them. I painted this with a loose brush, probably influenced by having been to the National Gallery in Washington DC and seeing so much great art there. The calm development of this painting came with such clarity that I can't help think that making a better effort to take trips to see more art is really important.
