The scenes along the Virginia Creeper Trail were amazing. We biked up and back down the trail recently and it was at a time that the fall colors were really popping. I felt so lucky to be there then. I had also taken in so much good art in Washington DC the days before our rides that I mined what I had seen when I was back in the studio. In this piece particularly, I was reacting to a painting by Gustav Courbet and the dark and heavy woods. Painted ground into figure from a black priming, the stark lighting just emerged with little effort. I love painting light, especially in something like this where the bright reflection in the stream completely dominates the image.
