Bent Tree in Moonlight
Bent Tree in Moonlight
oil and charcoal on canvas
16" x 20"
2026

This painting, from a drawing I did a while back, turned into a night painting after a few attempts at integrating the drawing with color. I love the idea of a moonlit view, though the original idea was in the raking daylight. But this painting sat and sat until one evening that I decided it was just done. I was tired of looking at it and needed to stop. But that moment came and went quickly as I saw a very clear idea of resolution. The trees behind the twisting branches were dark, and meant to fade away to bring out the shape of the foreground branches but instead they hid them. In a flash I brought light into the background trees, lit by the strong moonlight I imagined, and the image was suddenly resolved for me. I could see what I had been after for months. Sometimes it just happens that way, a long struggle is awoken by an unexpected burst of an idea. Allowing myself to feel finished freed me from the entanglements of the long frustration.
