Night Trees
Night Trees
oil on canvas board
16"x20"
2017

These two trees are on the side of a road I travel frequently. I have watched them in many seasons and times of day. I was convinced that the ideal time was in early morning when the sun broke low across their trunks and held that warm morning color, but in the bright light of a nearly full moon one night it hit me to work them into that sort of light. Working from sketches and memory I set this into motion going back to an older technique of glazes to create the night time light. This painting sat for a couple of weeks while I worked on other things. After looking through my History of Tonalism book for a few days I saw this with fresh eyes and got back to fiddling with the focus and some key contrast areas to bring it to a better finish.
