Willow
Willow

2023

It was a rainy day on a recent trip that we spent the day in Cashiers, North Carolina. We wandered around the town and came across this huge willow tree in a little field. It felt very nostalgic to me, it reminded me of the small fields on the edges of the peat fields in Kalamazoo. Skipper and I both found it a very nice image and both took several photos. I began sketching ideas for the painting by looking at both of our views and combined the framing accordingly. This painting evolved slowly but each step felt like it was always in the right direction, I did very little adjustment to anything, a rare process for me. It was one of the more slow moving and deliberate paintings I have done in a long while, and kept the feeling I was after throughout.
